| Dan, I wanted to compliment you on your e-Book. I found it supportive, educational, inspirational and full of "down to earth" facts about the road that you took, why you took it and what the ride was like. My wife enjoyed it too. It's good to relate to someone who has been there. My wife could be a supermodel and while she is supportive, she admitted it was hard to relate - until she saw it from your eyes. That perspective is critical. -Tony Dear Dan, This is just a note to thank you for your help. You've been my best resource for this surgery. You always get back to me quickly and I really appreciate it. Thanks again, -Joyce Simko Hello Dan, I just finished reading your book and I loved It! ... I am still trying to find the right words to describe how I feel about it. I know that it gives me hope for a brighter future , and it makes me realize that no matter what.... I have to have the surgery or I will never be able to live a normal life. I am missing out on so much of my life by being so heavy. I want to be able to climb stairs again without feeling like I can't breathe and like I am going to have a heart attack. I want to be able to try something on and have it look good on me. I want to be able to sit down in a restaurant without everyone looking at me like I should be eating out of a trough instead of at a table. I know that anyone who reads your book will enjoy it as I did. I have been telling everyone I know about it! Your book has really given me the information that I have needed to know that this is what I want to do as soon as possible. I know that I need the surgery so I can start living again........Thank you so much! Sincerely, --Stella Barnes Dear Dan, I just wanted to let you know that I read your book, listened to the audios, and began writing in the journal. I used your telephone list to locate surgeons and I made the calls to make appointments. ... Thank you for your kindness to my husband who always takes the bull by the horn and goes hunting for bear. He researches the net and always finds something useful. This time, he hit the jackpot. ...Because of your book, I know what to expect, I know questions to ask, and how to evaluate my options, and because I have your materials to help take the mystery out of the experience, I have begun to hope I might finally gain control over my weight. I am grateful. ... Im scared out of my wits. Im not a very brave person. But, Ive made a start and Ill take each step as it comes. I especially liked the work book journal. I think it made me review the factors of my life and understand myself better. And that strengthened my resolve to do what is necessary to win this war. Thank you for making your own experiences available. It helps to know that someone else has experienced this struggle and understands the challenges. I have already recommended your book to three of my friends. I would recommend your book to anyone. It would even be helpful to those without a weight problem but who have family members who are obese. Thank you. --Linda Hughes What I liked about the book is that it spells out in simple black and white exactly what is going to happen with your body after the surgery. At first, it was a little scary to read it all, but then I realized that it is so much better to know up front. The scariest thing in life is the unknown and I know that my fears were worse than the actuality. After reading your book, I realized that if you could do it, so could I. Thanks so much for all the info. --Zandra Most Dear Dan, WOW! So many questions were answered in your book! It was easy to read and hearing first hand what you went thru made it very real. I can't wait to have my first "off the rack" experience of having to keep reaching for the smaller sizes! I would recommend this book to anyone considering obesity surgery! -Rebecca Blalock Dear Dan: I downloaded your book and read it last night. Very impressive. ...I think it was great. I especially liked the story regarding Taco Bell. I think you have a natural talent for story telling. Amy is a lucky girl to have a guy who can express himself so well. After reading your book I am even more dedicated to this project. I too plan on chronicling my experience. We need to spread the word on this disease and the options available for treatment. Your book is a helpful tool. I think the testimonials in the back are great too. Some were rather long. Each was very powerful, especially the last one. I think that by humanizing our plight, we add allies at every turn. ... Thanks again for sharing your story. I look forward to the next edition... -Brian Seidler Dan I write this with tears of joy and sadness. Your book helped me so much. I liked the part where you said genes play a role in obesity. That it isn't your fault and to not feel like a failure. I was thin until I became a woman at 14. From that point on I did all that I could to lose weight. Like you I have tried every fad diet possible. I would do what ever it took to no avail. My family has the "fat gene." I love my family with all my heart but I fear I to will become heavier and heavier. I am gaining about 10LBS a year. If I don't have some kind of intervention my health is in jeopardy. I am afraid my health will deter ate over time giving me high blood pressure and diabetes. I torture myself by going in cloths stores where I know that I won't fit into the cloths. I feel like I am a skinny person a healthy person fighting in a obesity body. I try everything and to no avail I don't see any results. By reading your book I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I believe you when you say this surgery has changed you life. Right now I am looking at ways to finance this surgery. Thank you for all the information you gave on that. This will point me in the right direction to get the surgery. You have given me hope. I plan to make this a propriety because I will feel better about my self. Much thanks to all your help -Dannielle Kratzer ...got to read the your E-Book today. It is great and answered a lot of questions for me. The before and after pictures are really something else! Each chapter is a big help in getting ready for the surgery. Thanks! -Quinn Hooks Dan, I got the book yesterday and I read it last evening. Your explanation as to how you felt prior to the surgery really rings true especially the isolation problem. I've avoided reunions and get togethers because of the way I look and I've lost most contact with my life long friends. -Paul Doherty Dear Dan, I very much enjoy your books. The information in them is helping guide me through the GBS process. In the first book, My Obesity Surgery, I appreciated the information on your personal experiences before, during, and after the procedure. Reading about your thoughts and concerns, feelings and experiences during your life as a larger person mirrors my life. I found reading about you reassuring as it showed me that my thoughts are not unusual. Meaning; frustration, difficulties in doing things, aggravation of life in an uncomfortable body size, and the emotional hurt. As the book progressed through the weeks and days before surgery, I learned more about what to expect. Having the information makes it a lot less mysterious and frightening. This is the point I am at now. So reading what you went through shows me what I will be going through. With advanced information, the sailing should be smoother for me than what other people have tried to tell me. The information you give about living with the completion of your surgery gives a wonderful day by day account of what happens afterwards. Your insights of your feelings, actual experiences, (thinking about that burrito thing), help mentally prepare one for success in this part of life. Your book is quite helpful with the list of doctors through the country that specialize in the GBS. This information could save time, money, and lives. With the information about reputable surgeons, it cuts down on going to doctor after doctor, spending money and perhaps hearing repeatedly negative things about one's self. Without this list, I could see becoming more frustrated, and getting less qualified information than if one would have to guess at who to call. This information makes it possible for people who might truly need the surgery to not give up in frustration and quite seeking help from a specialized professional. The workbook and checklist is fantastic! With thoughts and events chronicled it is easy to stay on track with the progression of the GSI! What a wonderful way to be centered, informed, and focused on success! I appreciate your anticipation of my needs with this added benefit to the book package. Also, thank you for always being prompt, and diligent in your concern for me. Your encouragement and kindness is more than well noted. I will recommend your literature to others. -Beverly Merrian To Whom it May Concern: I have been overweight all of my adult life, and have tried every conceivable diet, eating program, exercise program, etc. that there are on the market. I have more Richard Simmons tapes and walking tapes, and other exercise tapes than most video stores. When you feel like a beached whale it is hard to do aerobic dance steps to music. At least it is for this for this NAMU. I have done W.W., Diet Center, Adkins, Pritikin, Metrical, Optifast, Liquid Protein, Protein Only, Carbohydrate Only. You name it, I, like most of you, have done them. The worst was the Green Apple/Hard-Boiled Egg diet. I still shudder at the thought of that one and what it did to me. The problem with all of these eating and exercise programs is you don't get any one on one help from someone who has walked in your moccasins. I know the leaders in W.W. and Diet Centers have all been overweight, and lost it on the program, but, I'm not talking 30 or 40 pounds, in my case I'm talking 250. Dan's Internet Site is one of the greatest things that ever happened to me and it was purely accidental that I found it. I thank God that I did. Through his site, I gained access to his book "SIX DOWN AND LIFE TO GO". (Newly re-titled "MY OBESITY SURGERY") This book is a must for anyone who is even remotely thinking of Obesity Surgery. In all the research I did, I kept lists of questions that came up that I thought I would have to get my Doctor to answer. DAN'S BOOK GAVE ME THOSE ANSWERS or gave me the place to go to get it. Best of all, Dan (who has been here and done it) does it with a sense of humor, and a knowledge of what is going on from his own personal experience. He also gives you his personal E-mail address and if you choose, he will call you personally to talk and alleviate some fears you may have. Between the book, and other information Dan gives you, YOU CAN BE ON YOUR WAY, knowing someone is as close as a telephone, and your email to answer and guide you. Dan, and many of the contacts I have made and written to have said, "JUST DO IT, DON'T WORRY ABOUT DOING IT, JUST DO IT." Thanks to Dan and his book, that is what I have decided to do. I have my pre-surgery consult in January 2003, By July or August 2003, I too, will be able to say I have "SIX DOWN AND LIFE TO GO". Thanks Dan for taking this project on and sharing your experiences. You will probably never know the number of people you have helped with your book and internet site but I am sure glad I am one of them. --Rick Jones Dear Dan I just finished reading your book "My Obesity Surgery" and I think it was great! I found your truths about being overweight and how it made you feel incredible touching, and to know how the weight loss surgery has changed your life is encouraging for me. I especially liked the part where you talked about what you could and could not eat after surgery, and the meat tenderizer remedy for stuck food cracked me up! That's a really handy thing to know:0) Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I think that your book is a real "treasure " for anyone thinking about having the surgery. Thanks bunches! -Holly Dear Dan, First I would like to say thank you. The work that you are doing is a godsend. Before you I didn't think there was any hope for me. I'm so inspired by your story. I suffer everyday of my life because of my weight. I've lost job opportunities because of it. I want to change. So I have decided to get surgery done... Thank you and God Bless. -Jessica Hernandez Dan, ... I don't think I would have made that first step if it wasn't for you, and your enthusiasm. Thank you. I will keep you up to date. -Sue Price Dan- Thank you for all your information and quick responses. It has meant a lot to me as I make the decision and will probably mean a lot as I go through the process. -Cynthia Rufty Dan: Thanks for the information about your book. The way to curb your fears is to learn from people who've had the surgery. I'm going right to your web site and buy it today. Thanks a bunch for listening!!! -Connie Linkous Dear Dan- You make me feel so confident and ... ugh.. I can't even describe it in words. Thanks! --Nicole W. Dear Dan- My name is Racquel Brown and I am a resident of Brooklyn, New York. I must tell you that your book has given me hope for a better life. I am a 23 year old college student who is 280 pounds. For the longest while, I have been told by several doctors and dietitians that I am morbidly obese because of my weight. I have been interested in the roux en Y surgery for some time now but after reading your book my interest has gone to another level. Dan I think that I now have something to look forward to. I am on the way to a new life because I am planning to schedule obesity surgery. Your book has done all the research for me because I have often wondered how I was going to get all the information of finding surgeons or even the insurance for my surgery. I did not have to do much however, because it was all spelled out in your book. -Racquel Dear Dan- I was so excited when I was able to print it out & it was such good reading that I read it as it came off the printer! You answered a lot of my questions about nausea & what you can & can not eat. My doctor had already told me about dieting before hand & sticking to a liquid/mushy diet for 3 weeks. It was reassuring, reading about your experience. You put it in layman's terms & did a wonderful job. I would highly recommend it. Thanks again! - Dawn Rutkowski Dear Dan- ... I've read your book and it was wonderful and gave me light at the end of my "fat" tunnel.. :) - Davis Dan: Thank you so much for your information. I know you can relate to the way my daughter feels about herself and that makes me more comfortable with the information you have provided. I will buy your book and read it with my daughter... -Marilyn Carmody Hello, Dan! Your information is wonderful and validated a lot of my thoughts. I'm 36 years old (LPN-Nurse), 5'9" and weight presently approx 267lbs. I am officially 100+lbs over my ideal weight... I know this is what I need to do, just need to do it and make sure this time I'm more likely to get it! -Ursula Henry Dear Dan Thanks for sharing your book about bypass surgery. The surgery is risky and expensive but I too feel that it is the only way to save my life. Its just the "fear of the unknown." Oh by the way I especially like the part about Jack and Libby. Isn't it amazing how our animals know how we feel, when we need some extra tlc and when NOT to JUMP on US! Thanks again for sharing and being honest about the pain, the throwing up and the eating patterns immediately after. -Mystic |
